Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD), a member of Dartmouth Health, has honored Brigitte Eastman, BSN, RN, CEN, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®.
The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate care nurses provide patients and families every day. Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues for the award. The award recipient is chosen by APD’s Professional Development Council.
Brigitte, a nurse with APD’s emergency department, is the hospital’s second DAISY Award recipient. She received two nominations from patients.
“Brigitte has taken care of me several times, I was diagnosed with a P.E. in my lungs and she was so on top of taking care of me. Her kindness is so special to me. She takes her time to listen to your problems. I truly hope she is a winner! She goes way above her duties to take care of people.”
“Brigitte took excellent care of me: mind, body and spirit. She understood that I needed education to participate effectively in my care and made sure that I understood the severity of my condition and necessity for treatment. She taught me to advocate for my needs when those unfamiliar with my case suggested going without oxygen. I could tell that she cared about me and was a knowledgeable professional who always brings her A+ game for her patients and fellow team members.”
“Brigitte is always striving to be the best nurse she can be,” said Kristie Foster, MSN, RN, GERO-BC, APD Emergency Department Nurse Manager. “You will often see her consulting the latest evidence-based literature so that she is providing the best care to her patients. She gives her best in all situations and has the patients best interest as her primary focus.”
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
"When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human, extraordinary, compassionate work they do. The kind of work the nurses at APD are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award,” said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation.
